High court refuses to block execution in Florida

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has refused to grant a last-minute reprieve for a Florida inmate set to be executed for the 1994 rape and killing of an 11-year-old girl.

The justices on Thursday turned down an appeal for 45-year-old Eddie Wayne Davis. He is scheduled to be given a lethal injection later Thursday.

The court rejected arguments that Davis’ clemency hearing was flawed and that he suffers from a rare medical condition that would cause him severe pain during the injection process.

Davis was convicted of raping the daughter of his former girlfriend and then suffocating her to death.

It would be the sixth execution in Florida this year and the second in the state since a botched April lethal injection in Oklahoma.
