MADRID (AP) — Spain is counting on cleaning up its lax record on pursuing cheating athletes through an anti-doping program funded by the International Olympic Committee.

On Wednesday, the Spanish Olympic Committee presented the program which involves 50 scientists working to improve the analysis of blood samples.

It says the program will work to develop tests of the body’s immune system that will indicate the use of banned performance-enhancing substances.

Spain’s tarnished reputation regarding doping hurt Madrid’s unsuccessful run of three straight bids to host the Olympic Games.

Committee president Alejandro Blanco says doping is a “scourge.”
