Magic sign 1st round draft picks Gordon, Payton

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Orlando Magic have signed both of their first round picks from last week’s NBA draft.

The team announced Wednesday that fourth overall pick Aaron Gordon and 10th overall pick Elfrid Payton, who the Magic acquired in a draft night trade with Philadelphia, have been signed to rookie contracts. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Both players will participate in the Orlando Summer Pro League which begins Saturday.

The Magic are hoping Gordon, the Pac-12 freshman of the year last season at Arizona, can fortify a front court that is thinner following the trade of swingman Arron Afflalo.

Orlando is looking at Payton, out of Louisiana-Lafayette, as possibly the team’s point guard of the future after the Magic decided to waive veteran Jameer Nelson.
