Angels’ Pujols plays day after injuring groin

CHICAGO (AP) — Albert Pujols is set to start at first base and bat third for the Los Angeles Angels against the Chicago White Sox on Monday night, a day after injuring his groin while running the bases.

Pujols was hurt Sunday in a loss to Kansas City. Trying for a double in the sixth inning, he pulled up as he neared second base and was tagged out. He revealed after the game that he first felt the injury on Wednesday.

The Angels’ medical staff diagnosed the ailment as a swollen lymph node.

“He feels good,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday. “It’s not really anything that’s muscular . just a little infection that got a little irritated. It shouldn’t be anything that’s going to impact what he needs to do.”

Pujols played a career low 99 games last season due to injury. He has played all but two games for the Angels this season.
