Dutch midfielder Fer out of Mexico game

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Netherlands midfielder Leroy Fer is out of his team’s round-of-16 clash with Mexico after injuring a hamstring in training.

Fer, who scored the opening goal in the 2-0 Dutch win against Chile on Monday a minute after coming on as a substitute, strained a hamstring in training the next day.

The team said Wednesday he is definitely out of the Mexico match on Sunday in Fortaleza and will likely also be out of the quarterfinal if the Dutch progress.
