WASHINGTON – The World Cup has its first truly memorable goal, and it comes ready-made with a perfect nickname: The Flying Dutchman.
Robin van Persie’s leaping header in the 44th minute of The Netherlands’ opening game vs. Spain on Friday was truly a sight to behold, knotting the score at 1-1 shortly before the half.
The tremendous pass delivered by midfielder Daley Blind met van Persie perfectly in stride a step inside the top of the box, and the striker’s header froze Spain keeper Iker Casillas in his tracks.
The Netherlands, ranked 15th in the world, pulled ahead for good on a goal in the 53rd. Van Persie would score a second goal on the way to a stunning 5-1 upset of the top-ranked and defending World Cup Champion Spaniards.
Van Persie's header was 17 yards, the longest headed goal measured at a World Cup since 1970. #ESPvsNED
