BALTIMORE (AP) — The Maryland Board of Physicians is upholding the license suspension of a doctor charged with molesting a female patient in Allegany County.

The board said Thursday that a disciplinary panel declined to lift the summary suspension of Dr. William Dando’s medical license after a hearing Wednesday in Baltimore.

The 59-year-old family practitioner has 10 days to request a full evidentiary hearing before an administrative law judge.

The board suspended Dando’s license June 5 after he was charged with molesting a patient at an urgent-care clinic in LaVale in April. Dando was licensed in Maryland in 1996 despite his 1987 conviction for rape in Florida.

The case has prompted state officials to consider making criminal background checks mandatory for medical license applicants.
