WASHINGTON (AP) — One of Washington’s top private schools has announced a massive campus consolidation plan that involves the purchase of a grocery store and car dealership in Tenleytown.

Georgetown Day School announced Thursday that it will spend about $40 million to bring together its lower, middle and high schools onto one new campus in northwest Washington.

The school is buying a neighborhood Safeway store and the Martens Volvo/Volkswagen car dealership. A school spokeswoman says officials are in the early stages of planning how to use the properties. It could include a commercial development to support the school financially.

The grocery store and car dealership will remain open for at least 10 months under lease agreements with the school.

Safeway had been contemplating a new development with a larger store and apartments.
