Rays Solis leaves game after taking ball off nose

BOSTON (AP) — Tampa Bay catcher Ali Solis left the game after a ball bounced into his nose while he was batting in the third inning of Saturday’s game against the Red Sox in his first career start.

Solis had an 0-2 slider from Boston’s Rubby De La Rosa bounce off the ground, catcher A.J. Pierzynski’s glove and at his nose. After a few minutes of being checked out by a team trainer, he had to leave the game with a nasal contusion.

Jose Molina took the remainder of Solis’ at-bat and was called out on strikes, but the strikeout — per scoring rules — was charged to Solis.

Molina took over behind the plate in the bottom of the inning.
