Fernandez rejoins Marlins with arm in a sling

MIAMI (AP) — Jose Fernandez has rejoined the Miami Marlins, but only as a spectator.

Last year’s NL Rookie of the Year entered the Marlins’ clubhouse four hours before Tuesday’s game against Philadelphia and extended his left arm to shake hands. His right arm wore a cast from above the elbow to his hand and rested in a sling.

Fernandez underwent Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow Friday, and he is expected to be sidelined 12 to 18 months.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since being sidelined, Fernandez says he was less than 100 percent in his final start May 9 at San Diego. He says he didn’t tell anyone, and he doesn’t blame anyone for his injury.

Fernandez says the ligament came off the bone, leaving him no choice but to undergo surgery.
