CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — A U.S. senator from West Virginia says the natural gas industry plans a pipeline to bring gas from south central Pennsylvania to North Carolina.

Aides to Sen. Joe Manchin tell the Cumberland Times-News (http://bit.ly/1mO9vR4 ) that Houston-based Spectra Energy has proposed a 427-mile pipeline running from a compressor station in Bedford, Pennsylvania, across Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia to a Duke Energy facility in North Carolina.

The newspaper reported Monday that the underground pipeline would enter Maryland near Flintstone and continue through Oldtown, where it would cross the Potomac River into Green Spring, West Virginia.

Manchin’s office says he’s gathering information about the proposed $4 billion pipeline.

Spectra is a pipeline builder and operator.

Manchin’s office says the project is four years from completion and would require federal regulatory approval.
