Coast Guard cutter holds change of command

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — The Virginia-based Coast Guard Cutter Northland has a new commanding officer.

A change of command ceremony took place Monday at the Coast Guard Base Portsmouth.

Cmdr. Jason Ryan relieved Cmdr. Holly Harrison as the Northland’s commanding officer.

Harrison’s next assignment will be as the Coast Guard’s national security affairs fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. She has commanded the Northland’s crew since May 2012.

Ryan previously served as the sponsor’s representative for the Offshore Patrol Cutter major acquisition project in the Office of Cutter Forces at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. He developed the Offshore Patrol Cutter’s requirements, achieved program approval from the Department of Homeland Security and award of ship design contracts for the $10 billion shipbuilding program.
