FC Edmonton beats Impact 2-1 in Canadian semifinal

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Michael Nonni scored in stoppage time to give North American Soccer League club FC Edmonton its first victory over a Major League Soccer team in Canadian Championship play, 2-1 over the Montreal Impact on Wednesday night in the first leg of the semifinal series.

Jack McInerney opened the scoring for defending champion Montreal in the 56th minute, and Tomi Ameobi tied for Edmonton in the 60th minute.

The second leg is next week in Montreal. In the other semifinal opener, Toronto FC beat the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1.

The Voyageurs Cup winner will earn a spot in the 24-team CONCACAF Champions League. The CONCACAF Champions League winner advances to the FIFA Club World Cup.
