LOWESVILLE, Va. (AP) — An Amherst County woman faces more than two dozen animal cruelty charges following the removal of 19 animals from her property.

The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office tells media outlets that three horses taken from 61-year-old Gerri Butler’s property in Lowesville had to be euthanized because of medical issues.

Nine other horses, three dogs, three cats and a donkey also were removed on Friday.

A June 5 trial is scheduled for Butler. She is charged with 29 animal neglect/cruelty counts, three counts of not having a dog’s rabies vaccine and three counts of not having county dog tags.

The sheriff’s office says Butler signed the animals over to the county.

The animals’ seizure following an investigation by animal control deputies and a veterinarian.
