HAT YAI, Thailand (AP) — Police say bombs have exploded at a police station and a convenience store in a tourist city in Thailand’s violence-plagued south, injuring at least nine people.

Police Col. Passakorn Klanwan says the first bomb exploded Tuesday in front of a 7-Eleven store in Hat Yai city, wounding five people.

He said the second explosion was probably a car bomb and went off in the parking lot at the main Hat Yai police station, injuring four others. The explosion damaged several vehicles and buildings.

Hat Yai is one of the biggest cities in Thailand’s south and is popular among Thai and foreign tourists.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces since an Islamic insurgency flared in 2004.
