DARPA turns discarded drones into mobile hotspots

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is repurposing old drones to bring high-speed Wi-Fi access to war fighters, according to Nextgov.

DARPA has field-tested technology for the unmanned aircraft to provide deployed service members with reliable connections just like the 4G cell-phone networks in the United States.

Retired SRQ-7 Shadow drones will be outfitted with small antennas and amplifiers.

The drones, which have a 13-foot wingspan, once gleaned information for the Army above the Middle East with lightweight pods.
