Va. moped driver killed after hitting pickup

WASHINGTON — A 37-year-old moped driver was killed on Tuesday when she crossed a center line in the Clifton area and hit an oncoming pickup truck, Fairfax County police say.

Yumei Wang Barber, of Centreville, Va., was on a 2012 Gabella moped headed north on the 7200 block of Clifton Road when she took a sharp turn, crossed the double-yellow line and moved into the path of a 2010 Ford pickup, according to a news release.

Barber’s moped hit the truck’s left back tire — a collision that knocked Barber off her moped. She landed in the northbound lanes of Clifton Road. A 42-year-old man driving a Range Rover SUV ran off the road to avoid striking Barber and struck a sign.

Barber was announced dead at the scene. Neither speed or alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash.

Police did not say if there were any other injuries.
