Death of 2-week-old baby investigated

WASHINGTON – Homicide detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department are investigating the death of a 2-week-old baby in Northeast, police said.

The newborn girl was rushed to the hospital after police were called to a home on Just Street NE in the Deanwood neighborhood off Sheriff Road NE at 3:36 a.m. Thursday.

When officers arrived, they were met by the baby’s mother and a man, who told police the baby was unresponsive, police said.

When the ambulance crew arrived, the baby was not conscious and was taken to the hospital.

A half hour later, the baby was pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital.

As for whether the baby’s death is considered suspicious, MPD spokesman Officer Araz Alali said, “Police are ruling nothing out. We’re covering all our bases.”

A neighbor tells WTOP she thought the home where police responded was vacant.
