Maryland rolls out welcome mat for Texas governor

WASHINGTON – Maryland is getting a visitor from the South with business on his mind.

Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry is set to arrive Wednesday as he continues to court Maryland businesses to come to Texas after launching a nearly $500,000 radio and TV advertising campaign.

Perry, who is rumored to be considering another run at the Oval Office, will hold meetings with owners of several private companies although the details of his schedule were not available.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has called Perry’s incursion into his state a “tired old PR gimmick.”

This is not the first time Perry has used this approach. He’s made similar ad buys in New York, Connecticut, California and Missouri.

Earlier this year, Gov. Perry tried to lure Maryland gun makers including Beretta to Texas after the Maryland legislature passed new gun control legislation that goes into effect Oct. 1.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated how much Perry paid for his advertising campaign.
