Student loan debt in D.C. highest in nation

Student loan debt in the U.S. is approaching a record $1.2 trillion, and nowhere do borrowers have more of it than in D.C.

Credit monitoring firm Credit Karma said the average outstanding student loan debt among District borrowers in July was $43,856, the highest in the nation when D.C. is ranked against states.

Maryland ranks second-highest, with average student loan debt of $32,374.

The national average for student loan debt in July was $28,524.

D.C. and Maryland also rank among the highest in the nation for mortgage debt and credit card debt.

Those borrowers are apparently keeping up with the payments. The District and Maryland also have among the highest credit scores in the country.
