WASHINGTON – A fallen police officer — a hero dog — has been honored in Prince William County.

The new dog park at 13000 Minnieville Rd. in Woodbridge has been named “K-9 Gunner Memorial Park.”

Gunner was a 7-year-old German Shepherd police dog that died in the line of duty in 2005.

Gunner had earned a number of awards.

The dog was killed by friendly fire while trying to apprehend a suspect.
