Officer shoots man during traffic stop

GAITHERSBURG, Md. – A wild overnight incident in Montgomery County left one man in the hospital following an officer-involved shooting.

“Exactly what transpired is still under investigation,” said Montgomery County Police Officer Rebecca Innocenti.

According to police, a traffic stop involving a sport utility vehicle sparked the confrontation.

“Officers approached that vehicle and officers observed a shotgun in that vehicle,” said Innocenti.

“One male officer discharged his firearm, which struck the suspect.”

But a bullet did not stop him.

The man reportedly drove away in his vehicle before crashing into a stopped car at Quince Orchard Road and Great Seneca Highway in Gaithersburg, Md. The investigation into the shooting closed the intersection for several hours early Monday.

The man was a suspect in a domestic incident in Howard County. He is recovering from injuries at the hospital.

Nobody else was hurt.

The investigation into exactly what occured will involve cooperation between the Montgomery County and Howard County police departments.
