WASHINGTON – Washington, D.C. often makes top 10 lists for the best universities or historical sites. But it’s also one of the top 10 worst places to retire in the entire country.

Despite all the free museums and activities, it’s expensive to retire in the District. Renters who are 60 and older spend more than $1,100 per month and a typical homeowners’ mortgage is nearly $2,000. And long term care costs are higher than the rest of the country, according to U.S. News & World Report. .

The news magazine lists the top worst cities to retire and D.C. finds company with San Diego, Honolulu, Los Angeles and New York City.

But the D.C. metro area is also home to some of the best places to live. Columbia, Ellicott City, Reston, Arlington, Gaithersburg, and Centreville all cracked Money Magazine’s Top 50 cities in 2012.
