What to refrigerate, and what not to

Kristi King, wtop.com

WASHINGTON – It’s hard to imagine kitchens without refrigerators, but a number of foods and household items are better off kept out of the cold.

Shine from Yahoo says tomatoes get mealy in the fridge. The flavor of coffee and potatoes are changed by cold.

Ground coffee and beans kept in the freezer or fridge can develop condensation. While bread dries out more quickly in the refrigerator.

Keep onions in the pantry but not near the potatoes. Potatoes release gases that can cause onions to rot.

Fresh garlic prefers room temperatures.

Also hurt by refrigeration: nail polish and batteries. The polish gets thick, the batteries get weak.
