Metro launches ‘Auto Reload’ for SmarTrip users

Andrew Mollenbeck, wtop.com

WASHINGTON – Metro riders have a new way to cut the payment line.

SmarTrip users can now sign up for a program called Auto Reload, which automatically adds money to fare cards once they drop below a certain dollar amount.

If it sounds like E-ZPass, it is. Riders can decide how much money to add when their card balance drops below $20, or below $10 for riders with senior citizen and disability cards.

The maximum reload purchase per day is $300.

Metro says it tested the Auto Reload feature with more than 1,300 customers.
