WASHINGTON – The popular Capital Bikeshare program continues to expand.
Beginning Monday, work starts on eight new Bikeshare stations in Old Town Alexandria, with the expectation they’ll be operational sometime in September.
Officials say the stations are the initiation of a pilot program in the city, with the option of adding more as funds become available.
The project received the go ahead in October of 2011, with a unanimous 7-0 vote by the Alexandria City Council.
Two Metro stops are included in the list of bike stations.
Future Station Locations:
- Prince St. / Union St.
- King St. / N Royal St.
- King St. / S Patrick St.
- Commerce St. / S Fayette St.
- N Saint Asaph St. /Pendleton St.
- N Henry St / Pendleton St.
- Braddock Road Metro
- King Street – Old Town Metro
Jillian Blake says she often rides her bike to the King Street Metro station, but the Bikeshare offers another viable option.
“If it was at home, and I wanted to ride up and down the streets here, I would use it,” she says.
Capital Bikeshare has more than 1,600 bikes at over 175 locations in Washington, DC, and Arlington County, according to its website.
The program started in May of 2010.
