Jewelry store robber may have repeated heist

WASHINGTON – There could be a connection between a violent jewelry store heist in Arlington and a earlier jewery store robbery in the District.

Arlington and D.C. police are now comparing notes on the two crimes after surveillance photos from both scenes showed a similar-looking suspect.

Tommy Wong, 52, of Herndon, Va. died in the Arlington robbery Friday at Capital Jewelers on Columbia Pike.

D.C. police confirm that the suspect in a June jewelry store robbery at 13th and F streets in Northwest is wearing a similar yellow traffic safety vest. Both robberies happened in broad daylight.

“As soon as we saw the Arlington suspect, we contacted Arlington with the information we had,” says Gwendolyn Crump, communications director for D.C. police. “MPD and Arlington investigators have shared notes and are working cooperatively to bring this case to closure.”
