New charging stations bring relief to electric car owners

WASHINGTON – It’s called “range anxiety,” and it’s a common fear electric vehicle owners experience when they worry they’ll run out of battery before finding their next charge.

In the D.C. region however, it is becoming a bit easier to find a charging station.

Eight new parking spaces with access to a charge just opened at Regan National Airport.

“We literally opened in the middle of the night Thursday night at Reagan National, and our first car drove in and plugged in at 5 a.m.,” says Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Spokesman Rob Yingling. “Another car came in at 7 a.m. Friday. The word is definitely getting out.”

At Reagan National, Yingling says this is a low cost system that’s being run as a pilot program.

“We’re providing the spaces for free. You pay the normal parking rate — there’s nothing extra charged to use the stations,” he says.

The new charging stations are on the ground level of Daily Garage B.

At Dulles International Airport, there are also eight new charging stations. Stations are already in at BWI Marshall Airport and Union Station.

Here’s a map of charging stations in the area.
