D.C. councilmembers subpoenaed in corruption probe

WASHINGTON – The investigation into government corruption in the District took another turn as several D.C. councilmembers received subpoenas this week.

Channel 4’s Tom Sherwood was first to report that federal investigators delivered subpoenas to the finance directors of several council campaigns.

The subpoenas ask for documents including checks and money orders relating to businessman Jeffrey Thompson and his associates.

Thompson is the largest single contractor with the District government and has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local candidates over the years.

The FBI recently raided Thompson’s home and office as part of the investigation into Mayor Vincent Gray’s campaign.

The U.S. Attorney’s office has been investigating Gray and D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown for months.

The subpoenas also seek telephone records, emails and bank records dating back to 2003.
