ASHBURN, Va. – The Redskins are considering taking summer training camp and the business that goes with it to Richmond.

The team has conducted its summer training camp at its practice facility in Ashburn since 2003.

The team has been talking with Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones’ administration for more than a month and a half, The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

Team representatives also met Wednesday in Richmond with city and state officials. Locations under consideration include the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University.

An NFL training camp generates about $5 million for the community it’s in, according to Eric J. Finkbeiner, a Richmond lawyer who is acting as a local consultant to the Redskins.

At Redskins Park in Ashburn, team officials aren’t denying they’d move summer camp. One person involved with the talks says the move could come within a year or two.

The Redskins last month ruled out a move to George Mason University’s campus.

Players trained at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., in 2001 and 2002.
