WASHINGTON – It used to be “Fido” or “Rover” or “Spot” sufficed as a catchy name for a beloved pet — but those days are over.
The website Vetstreet recently took a comprehensive look at the country’s most popular pet names, as well as those declining in popularity. And, according to them, the names we select for our furry friends say a lot about our society.
One noteworthy trend involves choosing cute, “nicknamey”-type monikers, such as Lulu or Milo — which are short and cute and somewhat old-fashioned, Vetstreet says.
“The names we choose for animals also symbolize our increasing connection to pets,” says Vetstreet. “The more human names we give our pets, the more family-like a role they tend to play. These names lend a feeling of warmth and personal attachment to the pet.”
