Weekend Wakeup Call – Friday, March 2 to Monday, March 5
It’s hard to believe we’re almost back to Daylight Saving Time, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves — That’s next week. This weekend, we have three Metro stations closing on the Red Line, some overnight roadway closures for the Express Lanes and Dulles Metrorail Projects, a marathon in Anne Arundel County, an early St. Patrick’s Day parade, and the D.C. Independent Film Festival will be packed with screenings and special events. Read on for all of the fun (and the not-so-fun) details.
I-495 Express Lanes construction
With the Express Lanes Project, here’s what you’ll find this weekend:
- Three left lanes will be closed on the Inner Loop before Route 7 (Exit 47) Friday and Saturday between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m., with intermittent full closures for up to 30 minutes.
- Three lanes will be closed on both loops of the Beltway between Route 236 (Exit 52) and U.S. 50 (Exit 50) Friday through Sunday nights between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- Friday and Saturday nights between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m., watch for lane closures on both loops of the Capital Beltway near Braddock Road (Exit 54) as well. There could be total temporary closures for up to 30 minutes.
- Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m., westbound Interstate 66 will have two lanes closed between the Dulles Connector Road (Exit 67) and the Beltway (Exit 64), with total temporary closures for up to 30 minutes. The eastbound side will have three lanes blocked between Nutley Street (Exit 62) and I-495.
Dulles Metrorail construction
Construction on the Dulles Metrorail will include the following:
- Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m., the eastbound Dulles Toll Road will have three left lanes closed between the Beulah Road overpass and Wolf Trap Road, with total temporary closures for up to 30 minutes.
B&A Trail Marathon
The Annapolis Striders B&A Trail Marathon is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Sunday, beginning at Severna Park High School. While most of the race will be on the B&A Trail, there will be some residential streets affected. Anne Arundel Police advise:
- Between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., Robinson Road in front of Severna Park High School will be closed.
- Between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., Evergreen Road will be temporally closed at Stewart Way down to Maple Avenue to allow participates onto the B&A trail.
- These closures will only last five to 10 minutes and should not cause any significant delay. Anne Arundel County Police Officers and Reserve Officers will direct traffic.
- The same closures on Robinson Road and Evergreen Road will occur again, as runners make their way back to Severna Park High School. The event should end around 1 p.m.
Alexandria St. Patick’s Day Parade
In Old Town Alexandria, the 2012 St. Patrick’s Day Parade is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and the following streets will be affected:
- King Street between Patrick Street and Lee Street
- Lee Street between King Street and Cameron Street
D.C. Independent Film Festival
The D.C. Independent Film Festival started Wednesday, but there will be plenty of interesting things happening over the weekend at all three venues: The Naval Heritage Center, E Street Cinema and the National Museum of American History Warner Bros. Theater.
Some of the highlights:
- The District’s first-ever zombie walk, followed by a showing of the film, Zombie Bohemia.
- A 2.5-hour presentation of experimental and animated short films.
- Several documentaries, including On Your Mark, Get Set, MOW!, a film about the sport of lawn mower racing, and a family who uses the sport to raise awareness about the little-known Huntington’s disease.
