How monthly job gains were revised, at a glance

Each year, the Labor Department revises its monthly jobs figures going back five years. It releases the totals the same day as the January jobs report, which this time showed that employers added 243,000 jobs. That was the most in nine months.
The revisions showed that employers added more jobs last year than previously thought: 1.82 million, compared with a previous estimate of 1.64 million. The revisions are based on unemployment insurance tax records. They are therefore considered more accurate than the department’s monthly surveys of employers.
