Md. State House turns purple with Ravens fever

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – If you notice the skies above Annapolis and Baltimore taking on a shade of purple at night – no need to consult your ophthalmologist. Your vision is just fine.

“Since the Ravens made the playoffs, the Governor ordered that the State House dome, along with Government House and the Baltimore State Office complex be lit in Ravens purple to celebrate the Ravens,” says Sasha Lourie, Curator with the Maryland Commission on Artistic Property and historian at the State House in Annapolis.

A check of the Governor’s website showed it’s framed in purple too.

Speaker of the House Michael Busch was asked if some of the lawmakers in in Annapolis, most notably those from the Washington suburbs were feeling a bit left out.

He smiled and replied, “If the Redskins were going to the playoffs or the Super Bowl, we’d certainly be excited about that as well.”

All day Friday, state workers compared the level of purple in their outfits – from purple ties, to jerseys, to purple beads on one State House employee.

“It’s very exciting — for those that follow the Ravens,” says Lourie.

Um, so he’s not a Ravens fan? A Silver Spring resident, he confesses. “Despite our 5 and 11 record this year, I’m still pulling for the burgundy and gold.”

But he’s happy for his coworkers who are rooting for the Ravens. “As the Ravens go, so goes the morale of all of state government!”
