Expect lots of Metro delays this weekend

Metro will again be a big problem this weekend, with major track work affecting all five rail lines. There will be some overnight roadwork in the District, the Home and Remodeling Show takes place at the Dulles Expo Center, and the annual March For Life will cause traffic headaches for the District on Monday. Read on for the details, and have a great weekend!

Lane shifts on Firth Sterling Avenue and South Capitol Street

The D.C. Department of Transportation is in the process of changing out 23 track drain systems along the street car tracks on Firth Sterling Avenue and South Capitol Street SE. When the work is done, cyclists will have a much easier time in that area.

DDOT will be working daily between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Friday through Tuesday. Expect temporary lane shifts on Firth Sterling Avenue SE between South Capitol Street and Suitland Parkway.

Overnight lane closures on New York Avenue NE

Overnight construction will block some lanes on New York Avenue NE near Florida Avenue on Friday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., lane closures on New York Avenue NE between Penn Street and Florida Avenue.
  • Only a single lane will be open in each direction.

Metro track work

All five Metro lines will be affected by major track work this weekend.  The work starts at 10 p.m. Friday and continues through system closing on Sunday.

Red Line

This weekend’s work will take place between Bethesda and Grosvenor, with buses replacing trains between those two stations.  In addition, Medical Center Station will be closed, with alternate shuttle service provided.

  • Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing on Sunday, shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains between Bethesda and Grosvenor.
  • Red Line trains will operate at normal weekend intervals in two sections: between Shady Grove and Grosvenor and between Bethesda and Glenmont.
  • Medical Center station will be closed.
  • On Friday night, the last Glenmont-bound Red Line train to operate before work begins will depart Shady Grove at 9:43 p.m. and depart Bethesda at 10 p.m. The last Shady Grove-bound train will depart Glenmont at 9:05 p.m. and Bethesda at 9:50 p.m.
  • The last Red Line train from Shady Grove will depart 15 minutes earlier than usual — at 2:15 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights (early Saturday and Sunday), and at 11:15 p.m. on Sunday night.
  • Customers traveling through the work zone should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time.

Orange Line

  • Trains will single track between East Falls Church and West Falls Church for testing of the Dulles rail project, and between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly for platform rehabilitation.
  • Orange Line trains will depart Vienna and New Carrollton every 24 minutes. Service will be coordinated with the Blue Line to provide service every 12 minutes at stations from Rosslyn to Stadium-Armory.  Additional trains will be operated based on ridership and available track space.

Blue Line

  • Trains will single track between Braddock Road and Van Dorn Street for rail rehabilitation.
  • Blue Line trains will depart Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center every 24 minutes. Service will be coordinated with the Orange Line to provide service every 12 minutes at stations from Rosslyn to Stadium-Armory. Additional trains will be operated based on ridership and available track space.

Green Line

  • Trains will single track between Naylor Road and Branch Avenue for rail renewal.
  • Green Line trains will depart endpoint every 24 minutes. Additional trains will be operated based on ridership and available track space.

Yellow Line

  • Trains will single track between Braddock Road and Huntington for rail rehabilitation.
  • Yellow Line trains will operate between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square every every 24 minutes. Additional trains will be operated based on ridership and available track space. Customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt. Vernon Square should use Green Line trains to complete their trip.

Home and Remodeling Show

The 2012 Home and Remodeling Show will be at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, running Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The show will feature appearances by television personalities and lots of exhibits from local businesses.

March For Life

The Metropolitan Police Department has provided the following information about the road closures and parking restrictions for the annual March For Life.

The march will be taking place on Monday with events at several locations.  In conjunction with these events, there will be several street closures and parking restrictions.

Beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., the following streets will be closed:

  • Maryland Avenue, NE from Constitution Avenue to First Street, NE
  • First Street, NE from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue, SE
  • 3rd Street, NW from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue, SW
  • 4th Street, NW from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue, SW
  • 7th Street, SW from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue SW

Beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m., the following streets will be closed due to the participants at the Verizon Center Prayer Session marching to the National Mall and will reopen at approximately 12:30 pm:

  • F Street, NW from 7th Street to 12th Street, NW
  • 12th Street, NW from F Street to Constitution Avenue, NW

The following street closures will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. for the march from the National Mall to the U.S. Supreme Court:

  • Constitution Avenue, NW from 3rd Street to 9th Street, NW
  • Constitution Avenue from 3rd Street to First Street, NE
  • 3rd Street, NW from C Street to Constitution Avenue, NW
  • 6th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW (no traffic east on Pennsylvania Avenue and 7th Street, NW from Pennsylvania Avenue to Constitution Avenue, NW)

Motorists will find the above listed roads closed until the last of the march participants have passed the intersections.  In addition, roads that lead directly to the march route will be closed to through traffic.
