Pollster frames candidates as middle school classmates

WASHINGTON — Pollster Peter Hart was a guest Friday on the “Politics Program” with Mark Plotkin, as were Montgomery County Council members Nancy Floreen and Hans Riemer.

Hart broke down his new poll, which asks participants to describe the personalities of current presidential candidates, including incumbent Barack Obama, as if they were members of a grade school classroom.

Some had distinct descriptions, such as Texas Gov. Rick Perry as the “bully,” while others were not quite as clear.

“The problem with the Obama presidency is we don’t have a clear handle,” Hart says. “This is a person who people like personally, but doesn’t have a clear personality.”

The Montgomery County Council members discussed the allocation of local transportation dollars, and how that relates to taxes versus fees like tolls.

“We have an obligation to address the most needy in the community,” Floreen says.

The pair also addressed recent accusations that the county is not business friendly, spurred by comments from Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell who seeks to attract large contractors to his state.

“You get a lot of value in Montgomery County for the taxes you pay, but we need to do more,” Riemer says. “We need to focus on our workforce, and make sure a company will find the highest quality workforce in the region.”

County government needs to “look more” at job training opportunities offered at Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery College, he says.

Both council members approve of the recent push for a curfew for young residents.

“As a politician it’s a tough decision,” says Riemer. “As a dad, it isn’t tough at all.”
